Reclaimed Wood Coffee Table
A reclaimed wood coffee table brings character and history into your living room. This project uses salvaged planks, sanded smooth and sealed with a matte hardwax oil, paired with industrial hairpin legs. The result is a sturdy, statement piece that costs a fraction of a designer version.
Step by step
- 1
Source and inspect the wood
Find dry, stable reclaimed boards. Check for nails, staples, and soft spots. Pull any metal and let the wood acclimate in your shop for a week.
- 2
Mill and square the boards
Joint one edge and rip each board to a consistent width. Plane to 3/4" thickness if needed. Aim for four pieces that will glue up to roughly 40" x 22".
- 3
Glue up the top
Apply a thin bead of wood glue to mating edges, clamp with even pressure across the width, and let cure for 24 hours. Use cauls to keep the top flat.
- 4
Sand progressively
Start with 80 grit to flatten the surface, move to 120 for smoothing, and finish with 220. Ease the edges with a roundover or hand sanding.
- 5
Attach the hairpin legs
Position legs 2" in from each corner. Pre-drill pilot holes to prevent splitting, then drive screws. Use a level to ensure the table sits flat.
- 6
Apply the finish
Wipe on two coats of hardwax oil with a lint-free cloth, sanding lightly with 320 grit between coats. Let cure for 48 hours before heavy use.
