Fix a Dripping Kitchen Faucet
A dripping faucet wastes water and drives up your bill. Most modern kitchen faucets use a replaceable cartridge that swaps out in minutes once you know the brand and model. This guide walks you through shutting off the water, disassembling the handle, and installing a new cartridge.
Step by step
- 1
Shut off the water
Close the supply valves under the sink and open the faucet to release pressure. Place a towel in the sink basin to catch dropped parts.
- 2
Remove the handle
Pry off the decorative cap, remove the screw underneath, and lift the handle off. Note the orientation of every part for reassembly.
- 3
Pull the old cartridge
Unscrew the retaining nut with a wrench. Pull the cartridge straight up; if it sticks, wiggle gently rather than prying sideways.
- 4
Install the new cartridge
Grease the O-rings with plumber's grease and drop the new cartridge in the same orientation as the old one. Reinstall the retaining nut snugly, not overtight.
- 5
Reassemble and test
Replace the handle and cap. Open the supply valves slowly and check for leaks at the base and spout. Cycle the handle from hot to cold to confirm smooth operation.
