Shaker Plank Accent Wall
A Shaker plank accent wall adds architectural interest to any room and is one of the highest-impact projects a DIYer can tackle. This version uses pre-primed MDF planks for a smooth, paintable surface that costs far less than solid wood and stays flat over time.
Step by step
- 1
Plan the layout
Measure the wall and decide on plank orientation. Horizontal works in most rooms; vertical draws the eye up in spaces with low ceilings.
- 2
Find the studs
Mark stud locations with a chalk line. Planks need to hit studs every 16" for a solid nailing surface.
- 3
Install the first row
Use a level to set the first row perfectly straight at the base. This row sets the pattern for every plank above it, so take your time.
- 4
Continue stacking rows
Stagger seams for a natural look. Use a spacer block to keep the reveal consistent from row to row.
- 5
Caulk and fill
Fill nail holes with wood filler and run a thin bead of caulk at the ceiling, floor, and corners.
- 6
Prime and paint
Roll on one coat of primer, then two finish coats. Use a small foam roller for smooth coverage and a brush for the edges.
