Painting Mistakes That Give Away the DIY Job
The most common giveaway of a DIY paint job is visible roller marks and lap lines. These happen when you let a section dry before rolling the next one. Work in manageable sections, keep a wet edge, and lay off the final pass with light pressure for a smooth, even sheen.
Second on the list is poor cut-in lines at the ceiling. Freehand cutting in takes practice. If you're not confident, run a strip of painter's tape along the ceiling edge, press it down firmly with a putty knife, and pull it while the paint is still slightly wet. You'll get a glassy clean line every time.
Finally, don't skip primer on bare drywall or patched areas. Without primer, those spots absorb paint at a different rate and flash through as dull patches no matter how many coats you apply. One coat of primer is the difference between a room that looks good and one that looks pro.
