Low-Maintenance Houseplants for Real Life

Low-Maintenance Houseplants for Real Life

Not every plant parent has time for a daily misting routine, and that's fine. The best houseplants for most homes are the ones that adapt to inconsistent care. Pothos, snake plants, ZZ plants, and cast iron plants are nearly indestructible, and they look great in nearly any room.

The single biggest mistake new plant owners make is overwatering. Most houseplants prefer to dry out between waterings, and pots without drainage holes are a fast track to root rot. If you fall in love with a decorative pot that has no drainage, use it as a cover and keep the plant in a plastic nursery pot inside.

Light matters more than water. A plant in the right light with average watering will thrive; a plant in the wrong light with perfect watering will slowly decline. Spend a weekend watching the light patterns in your home, then match plants to those conditions.
